Post-4: Reading and Writing Activities

Dear All

Today we are going to discuss a number of activities to help the students master their reading and writing skills. I've uploaded the materials on my google drive so that you could access them from there

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YEMiKeJm8Ry1dVcSdR2YQq5Yt_nYWmtS

First, I'll give you an overview of these activities and then we'll decide which of them you would like to try out. It'll give you a chance to get acquainted with some principles and techniques you need to take into account when preparing such activities.

After that, we'll do several of your choice in class together.

Hope you'll find the activities and tasks useful and will enjoy doing them.

See you in class shortly.

Here is a list of resources for today's class:
Classic American short stories
Great short stories, from one word to more 2048
Very short novels (299 words maximum)

    1. Dear All,

can you add a couple of links to the resources you mentioned last time, which I made a summary of above?

Sergey: share a couple of video sharing services you have used
Lena: share a list of 3-4 resources you usually search for information on
Natasha: share some more details about the dictionaries you have used and information about the podcast services you have listened to. Explain what attracts you to to these particular resources and share the links to them

Viktoria: can you share the information about a couple of educational video and entertainment resources you have used?

    2. On a daily basis I use the Russian site called Multitran:
      https://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?a=1
It attracts me by having the options of translation to all my target languages.
There are two very important dictionaries for me: Cambridge Dictionary https://dictionary.cambridge.org/
      and Merriam-Webster Dictionary https://www.merriam-webster.com/.
Talking about podcasts, unfortunately, I know only one site with this option http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/, because normally I prefer to download them with iTunes.

  2. Choose one of the activities that I've shared the descriptions of on my drive, do it as a student and be ready to discuss the experience next time from the point of view of a Teacher

  5. I’ve read the story of Edgar Alan Poe “The cask of Amontillado”. It is a story of very cruel revenge of the man who decided that he was treated badly by his friend, and I like it for it is written with talent.

    1. Hello, thanks for reading the story and summarising it. Do you think it would be an interesting task for your students to complete? Why or why not? What level of students is it appropriate for? Does it encourage the development of reading and writing skills? What difficulties (if any) can your learners experience when completing this task?

    2. I also have a comment about the technical side of posting smth online. It is common to provide a link or links to the resources you discuss. Also, it is common to prepare the links using some URL shortening tool, such as, for example, http://bitly.com. It does what it says: shortens the URLS, which makes your posts easier to read.
